Frequently Asked Questions
-
Play therapy is a developmentally appropriate form of child therapy that allows children to express emotions, process experiences, and build coping skills through play. In my play therapy practice in Colorado, I use both Child-Centered and Synergetic approaches to support emotional awareness and nervous system regulation in a way that feels safe and natural for your child.
-
Children may benefit from therapy if you notice ongoing anxiety, emotional outbursts, behavior changes, social struggles, perfectionism, difficulty adjusting to transitions, or stress related to divorce or family changes. You don’t need a crisis to seek support—sometimes therapy is simply a proactive way to strengthen resilience and emotional skills. Ultimately though, it is up to you when you feel that you could benefit from additional support.
-
I work with children navigating anxiety, emotional regulation challenges, behavioral concerns, family transitions, divorce, trauma, peer difficulties, and self-esteem struggles. I also offer parent coaching to help caregivers feel confident responding to big emotions at home.
-
Parents are an essential part of meaningful change. For child clients, I include regular parent coaching sessions to support you in understanding behavior through a nervous system and neuroscience-informed lens. This collaborative approach helps progress extend beyond the therapy room.
-
I protect your child’s privacy to build trust while also keeping you informed about themes, progress, and areas of growth. Rather than sharing every detail, I focus on helping you understand what your child is working on and how you can support them effectively at home.
-
Every child is different. Some families see meaningful shifts within a few months, while others benefit from longer-term support. Consistency and parent involvement significantly influence progress, and we will regularly evaluate goals together.
If we can schedule weekly sessions at least for the first 8-12 weeks, I tend to see progress more quickly. It is an investment, but means we can then assess and wean off slowly if appropriate after that.
-
Progress may look like improved emotional regulation, increased flexibility, stronger coping skills, or shifts in how your child responds to stress. Change is often gradual but meaningful. We will write a clear goal that we will check in about regularly to ensure therapy is supporting these behavioral changes that you can see and feel.
-
It’s common for children to feel unsure at first. I move at your child’s pace, focusing on building safety and connection before deeper work begins. Resistance often softens as trust and rapport develops. You can let them know that you met a really cool lady who knows how to play in a way that helps with big feelings, and leave it at that. A child benefiting from therapy doesn’t have anything wrong with them!
-
I view challenging behaviors as communication rather than defiance. Instead of focusing on compliance alone, I support children in building regulation, awareness, and more effective coping strategies. This neuroscience-informed perspective often leads to lasting change rather than short-term behavior control. I will set boundaries when necessary, especially when safety is in question. I will work with you to also set boundaries with your children in a firm but caring way.
-
While my specialty is play therapy for children, I also provide therapy for teens and adults in Colorado. With older clients, my approach remains collaborative, honest, and direct, supporting insight, emotional regulation, and personal growth.
-
Our work together is collaborative, genuine, and direct. With children and families, I help parents understand behavior through a nervous system-informed lens, which can feel challenging but often is a transformative change. I value openness over perfection and encourage families to step into growth at their own pace. With teens and adults, I bring the same honesty and authenticity, creating space for insight and empowerment.
-
My approach blends Child-Centered and Synergetic Play Therapy techniques to strengthen emotional awareness and self-regulation in children, while closely collaborating with caregivers to extend progress beyond the therapy room. With teens and adults, I am direct, genuine, and relational—creating space for real, lasting change.
